A Stroll Around the Neighborhood

I was done with work around 5pm
Decided to go for a stroll
Wandered down to Astoria Park where
Singles and couples and families were
Out walking and running
Kids were playing ball games on the field and
People were lounging on the grass
Enjoying the sun
Nibbling on impromptu picnics

Under the bridge
Down the path toward
The Hell Gate Bridge
Like a mini Sydney Harbour Bridge
In pink
(Well, it’s more the other way around
The Sydney Bridge is modeled off the Hell Gate
A giant grey version on the other side of the planet)
I treated myself to an ice cream cone
Walked up Ditmars
Across Steinway
Failing in finding new running shoes
But discovering hookah bars
And coffee shops
And whole other worlds to explore

By the time I got home
It was almost a quarter to eight with
Nearly five miles under my feet

Waiting for the Laundry

It was a beautiful warm spring morning
Not too hot, not too cold with a
Bright blue sky
The air was fragrant and
I sat on the bench outside the laundromat
Watching the passers-by
And chatted on the phone with an old friend.

the rose

stop and smell
the lovely perfume
that reminds you of spain
that reminds you of abuela
that feels soft and velvety
that is an unexpected pause
in the middle of the day.

the azaleas

It was a gorgeous bright blue sky day
The air was warm and sweetly scented, and
The azaleas were resplendent
In all their pinks and purples and reds.

Excited AND Scared

It’s exciting and scary
To give yourself permission
To go forward and
Make the attempt
To fulfill the dreams that you’ve held
For oh so long
To be on your own path
And not worry about what the other people are doing,
Or have done,
On theirs
To breathe into your own lungs
And to find the strength
To live your life.

Ushering

During intermission
I met an elderly gentleman who
Back in the day
Was a set and costume designer
He worked on over 250 shows
And then turned to fashion
He’s still an avid theatre goer
Has seen almost every show this season
He was enjoying Hadestown
But thought it was missing elements of the opera
He took the time to learn my name
And remembered it as he was leaving
It was fun to talk theatre
And to be able to talk about shows
That had opened and closed before I was even born
To know their context
He and his partner made me smile
The joy of theatre.

moving day

Ralph drove me in to the city
It wasn’t until we were crossing the GWB
That it hit me I was actually moving back to the city
It made me gasp out loud
Ralph laughed -
“I can hear your brain whirring.”

There’s a huge tree outside my window
It’s almost like I‘m in a tree house
My prayer flags are up
They’ve been with me since I moved out of home
In my early twenties
Nearly two decades ago

I didn’t have lunch until nearly 3
I went exploring
The activity and plethora of food options
Within a fifteen minute radius of my apartment
Is incredible
After the quiet of Carteret
It feels like culture shock

It turns out Tonya and Jason live a few blocks away
I went to the park with Tonya and the kids
And then we went back to their place
And while the eldest built train tracks across the floor
I fed the youngest his bottle
How long has it been since I fed a baby their bottle?!

I unpacked all my clothes
Made the bed
Found my uniform for tomorrow
I still have to figure out the kitchen
And unpack my books

I miss Aaron
I miss Voltaire
I feel like I must be on some kind of strange vacation
And soon I’ll be back with my boys

For now, I am here and
Here I am.

Sparrow

The air was warm
The sky was blue
I happened upon a street fair and
Found a gorgeous fairy/butterfly ring
I got lunch for less than $6 - in midtown!
(And it wasn’t even street meat!)
And sat in Bryant Park
Surrounded by locals and
The United Nations of tourists
A little sparrow hopped in front of the table
Frolicked in the dust
And flitted off
Delighted.

Smile

It was warm enough to sit outside
Between shifts
I got noodles
And sat in the courtyard
Behind New World Stages
It was buzzing with people
Chatting, drinking, eating, laughing and
Enjoying the weather
I also picked up my keys
And they had a smiley face keychain.
