The surprise of acquiring knowledge of
Things outside your sphere
Being in the room with student doctors
And seeing how they learn to
Differentiate, diagnose
Through a myriad of acronyms
And prior knowledge of
Chemistry and biology and physiology
And how it all interacts
And watching them learn to do a physical
You are the body they are learning on
The taking of blood pressure
The shining of the ophthalmoscope
How to feel pulses
Check the sinuses
Auscultate the heart
Conduct an abdominal exam
Treat a patient like a person
How fascinating it is
That we can study the human body
And attempt to cure
What ails.

Dog Life
Playing with Volt
In the backyard
Watching him scamper
After his plastic bone
The way he gleefully pounces on it
Comes trotting back and
Plays keep away
His tail wags
You can see him smiling
Joy on four limbs
And a ridiculously long tail
And big floppy ears
(I’m so glad he never grew into them)
And it’s worth being out
In the cold night air
This ridiculous wonderful creature
Life is truly better
With a dog
