hammock
Happiness is
Lying in the hammock and
The air is warm and
The breeze is warm and
You’re staring up at a tree
Whose green leaves are just starting to pop
And behind the tree is
A gloriously blue sky.

meeting
When you meet a friend
Who you’ve been working with online
For over a year
In real life
And you discover
You’re actually kindred spirits
To be in the room
With a hundred women entrepreneurs
Excitement and inspiration
Doing the thing.

A Salon
An extraordinary event
A salon (ooh la la)
Exploring “What is reality?”
Remember in high school when you read about
Voltaire and the Enlightenment
And how he and his lover
Marquise du Châtelet
Held salons
Where philosophers and poets and writers and artists
Would convene to share ideas
And perform plays
And you thought
Oh yes, that sounds
Very Appealing
You try a VR headset for the first time
A short musical theatre piece
About climate change and the rising oceans
Filmed in the Channel Islands
Off the coast of California
And first you’re on the dock
And then you’re on a boat
And then you’re in the ocean
And swimming in the water and
You have a flashback to Danbury Hospital where
You’re drugged up on morphine and a
Chemical chemo cocktail
And all you want
Is to swim in the ocean
You save pictures of beaches
From your childhood on your phone
And present day you is
Sitting on a hard plastic chair in an old factory in Chelsea
With a slightly cumbersome contraption on your head
And your heart catches in your throat and
Your body feels the longing and
You are swimming in the sea
And the sky is blue
And the music is gorgeous
And the visuals are stunning
And there’s even a hat tip to Esther Williams
And you don’t want it to be over
A room full of theatre practitioners
Folding technology and art
And performing musical plays
And you think about how one day
Manhattan will probably be under water
And you imagine future divers
Exploring Broadway theatres
Like underwater caves
And you wonder
Will they know what transpired here?

Keyport, NJ
I feel restless
Want to go somewhere different and
Remember a town nearby with
A labyrinth that overlooks the water
It is a bright blue sky day
Slightly chilly but nice in the sun
Voltaire is in a hurry to explore
Pulls on his leash
Where do you think you’re going, buddy?
Across the water, Manhattan
The park is a little run down
No seats in the gazebo
Everything looking tired
In need of fresh paint
NO DOGS on the pier
NO DOGS in the playground
The labyrinth (dogs allowed)
Community built
Hand-painted bricks declaring
Peace and hope and love
And beyond
The bright blue sky
And the dark blue sea
Voltaire is uninterested in meditative walking
Past the beach and down the street
Historic homes with lovely gardens and private water access
A private yacht club
And private drive-ways
A tiny thrift store
It is suddenly warm, too warm for a coat
A couple on a bench
Their dog is excited to make new friends
The woman is a nurse, retired
Her sister is a nurse (still working?)
Her daughter is a nurse (definitely working)
She reminds me of Nurse Jackie
She shares places we should visit
Do you know of -
How about -
I make a note for future excursions
It was a nice change of scenery
Wore out the boy
I’d like to go back to walk the labyrinth
And stare out to the sea.

Bliss.

Remember
It’s funny how things have a way
Of returning
UNSW memories
Abuelo, St. Ives
The house on Eldridge Street
The anniversary of our family arriving in Australia
Delving through old writing to find a post
Who was that person that wrote that thing
Twelve years ago --
Only twelve?
It must be longer
The time and space in between
Before you left
And after you arrive
Sydney and New York
Well New Jersey really
But your heart is in the city
Folding all these different You’s
Into self.

Team Meeting
When you can work together
Bounce ideas
Make suggestions
What if we…
The Ah-Ha!
The collective thrill of
Putting it together

17 hour day
The kind of day
Where you’re up at 6am
Out the door at 6.45
And not home again until nearly midnight
And in between
You’ve played a fake patient
Edited your podcast
Set up the camera for rehearsal
Sung through Iolanthe
Had a D&M with a friend
Collapsed into bed
Exhausted
And happy.
