Las frutas

Another Too Good to Go bag
This time, a bag of fruit and veg
I passed a family with three small children
Two boys, maybe 5 and 4,
And a little girl, still a baby
Barely 2
Mama begging with an empty pizza box
"Would you like some fruit?" I asked
"Solo español" she replied
"Quisieras frutas?"
"Si. Gracias."
I gave her all the mandarins I could find in the bag
The little girl
"Gracias! Gracias!"
Her radiant beaming smile
What has her mama endured to get her here
To the streets of New York?

The Kit Kat Club

Returning to the Kit Kat Club
This time in New York
This time as an usher
The adrenalin of working a show you've never worked before
In a brand new space
With all new logistics
How gorgeous it looks
The thrill of it
The theatricality of it
Getting to feel a part of it
Even though you long to be on stage
And to paint your face
And wear fabulous costumes
And to dance to that glorious music
But for now you're in the room...
And how joyous it is

Burger and Fries

Sometimes you feel like
A juicy burger and fries
And you find a little
Greasy spoon kind of place
Down the road
And it just
Hits the spot

Alchemy

The Kingston biscuit*
One of my favorite Aussie snacks
A coconut biscuit
Filled with chocolate
The algorithm got it right when it offered me a recipe
Around the time I flew back from my trip
To the land of my childhood
And tonight I finally had the time
To mix the sugar, butter, flour
Oats and desiccated coconut
A pinch of salt
And a generous slurp of maple syrup
Into teaspoon-sized balls
Bake them in the oven and
Let them cool
Melt the chocolate
(Is there anything more delicious and sumptuous and sensual than melted chocolate?!)
And put it all together
I was a good girl, I had a proper dinner first
Before I sat down with my treat
And that chocolate and coconut
And oats and syrup
And sugar, butter, flour
Tasted like the best memories
The alchemy of baking
*In Australia, a cookie is called a biscuit.

Easter Hat Parade

The unhinged joy of the
5th Avenue Easter Hat Parade
Boundless creativity
Bright colors
Every age, ethnicity, body type
Out in their Sunday Best
Posing for pictures
Laughing, admiring, jostling
A hat that looks like dollar slice!
A model making pigeons look glamorous!
A garden of flowers being bathed in running water!
Floral blooms and butterflies galore
A glorious New York tradition

A Bouquet

At the end of a long day
A vase of beautiful flowers
Sitting on the street
Check for a card
Perhaps someone had put them down for a moment?
The security guard across the street motioned
"Take them!"
Carefully carry them on the subway
Walk the 6 blocks home
And feel thankful
For this lovely gift

Friday Things

Today was filled with
The joy of running
The promise of spring
The exuberance of a sweet puppy
The unexpected treat of
Ice cream with fudge before work

Thou Mayest

Today I was introduced to the concept of
Timshel
And although it is debated whether the word itself
Is actually a true Hebraic word
It has come to mean
"Thou shalt," as in
You must (do the thing)
You will (it is destined you will do the thing), or
You mayest (choose to do the thing)

It is a strange thing to be on this earth
To be here at all
How must we live our lives?
Dancing on the precipice of
The extraordinary gift it is to be alive
And the everyday banality of life

As the Buddha said
Life is suffering
And, as Cary Elwes further expanded
Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something

We must live
We will live
We may live
We choose
Life.
